Electrocardiograph

The electrocardiogram (ECG) is a simple, non-invasive test used to investigate chest pain and detect abnormal heart rhythms.

How is an ECG performed?

ECG electrodes are attached to your chest and arms whilst lying flat on a bed. By positioning leads on the body in standardised locations information about the electrical activity of the heart can be obtained.

How do I prepare for the test?

The test is painless and harmless and only takes about five minutes. Very rarely ECG electrodes may cause skin irritation. You will be asked to remove clothing above the waist so please wear items that are easy to remove. Note that a referral from your doctor is necessary in order to attract a Medicare rebate but no appointment with the Centre is necessary.
